Veteran gospel diva Joyce Simeti has died.

Simeti, 42, succumbed to chest pains and died at Arcadia Medical Centre in Harare yesterday afternoon.

Her daughter Rejoice confirmed the sad development.

“Yes she passed on this afternoon (yesterday). She had been complaining of chest pains for the past few days,” said a devastated Rejoice.

Her sudden death has left many in shock especially those who saw her dancing and enjoying the recent Sinach show at the Glamis Arena in Harare earlier this month.

Simeti recorded her first album Tose Takadanwa in 2002 with Ngaavongwe Records. She then followed up with NaMwari Zvinoita but the two albums received lukewarm responses.

Her major breakthrough was in 2005 when she left Ngaavongwe Records and joined TMC records. Her hit song Kudza Baba naMai received rave reviews and catapulted her to instant stardom.

At the time of her death, she was an active musician at United Family International Church (UFIC). She then moved to Diamond Studios and in 2013 she dropped an album titled Anozvigonesesa.

She is survived by three children and a husband, Stanley Simeti. Mourners are gathered at Number 27 Ambelside Road in Braeside, Harare. — LoudVoice
