TOP Zimbabwean cage fighter Elvis “Bulawayo Bomber” Moyo has been dealt a blow after failing to get an opponent for Thursday’s bill at the Coca-Cola Dome, Johannesburg, South Africa. After convincingly beating Knife Didier-Kolola last month in Cape Town, Moyo earned himself an opportunity to battle with a European opponent who has since pulled out after contractual disagreement.

Speaking from his Johannesburg base yesterday, a dejected Moyo who had hoped to cash in on the fight said his next bill will be in February.

“This will be a gloomy festive holiday for me because I’d hoped to cash in from the Thursday night fight. I was just advised on Friday that the guy from Spain who I was supposed to fight had big demands which EFC Africa felt were steep and they tried looking for any available local fighter but again it seems no one wants to face me. What I’ll simply do is to wait for the next fight which will be in February,” said Moyo.

Had he managed to fight on Thursday, the Sizinda-bred heavyweight pugilist whose stakes have risen in Extreme Fighting Championship would have received at least R50,000.

Moyo who turned to cage-fighting at the beginning of the year after being frustrated in boxing where he could not get challengers, has won three of his five matches. The fights are staged every six weeks.

He registered victories against Sors “Guru” Grobbelaar at the beginning of the year and in August when he overpowered Wilhelm “Tiny” Strauss with his last win being last month against Knife Didier-Kolola. His defeats were against Brendon Groenwald in May and Andrew Van Zyl in July.

The former Tshaka Youth Centre boxer-turned-wrestler also lost some of his sponsors following cancellation of his fight.

“I just have to start from scratch in January because the guy who was sponsoring my wrestling training has pulled out saying he can’t fork out money without guarantees of me getting fights. There were also some of the sponsors like Londoloza Securities who’ve put our deal on hold until I get fights. Without sponsors it will be tough but I just have to endure this period and keep working alone so that I remain in shape,” Moyo said.
