FATIMA High School pupil Dickson Kapandura was the toast of the two-day National Association of Secondary Schools Heads (Nash) Matabeleland North track and field athletics competition that propelled Lupane District to the provincial crown on Friday. The tournament was held at Fatima High School. Lupane District amassed 69 medals consisting of 28 gold, 19 silver and 22 bronze followed by Hwange District with 22 gold, 17 silver and 12 bronze medals. Third place went to Binga District with 16 gold 18 silver and nine bronze medals.

However, it was 16-year-old Kapandura, who clearly stole the show with five gold medals, three from individual races and two from the 4 x100M and 4x 400M relays.

“It feels wonderful. I’m naturally happy to have won and I want to do even better in the inter-provincials,” said Kapandura. He clocked 11.50 seconds in the 100M dash in the boys’ 17 years and under. Kapandura said he intends to earn a living from athletics.

In other races, Diase Banda took gold in the girls’ 20 years and under 100M race in a time of 13.80 seconds followed by Zibusiso Ndlela (14.30s) and Constance Ncube of Umguza (14.40s).

Mandlenkosi Maphosa was first in the boys’ 17 years and under high jump after he cleared 1.72M.

Meanwhile a provincial team of 95 athletes was selected for the inter-provincial finals set for Hillcrest College in Mutare next week.
