FORMER Chicken Inn FC utility player and captain Guide Goddard is in an ecstatic mood after he guided the club’s developmental side to the Zifa Southern Region Division One League in his debut season as a coach.

Goddard (35), a former Zimbabwe youth international who also did duty for Highlanders, hung his boots at the end of last year after over 10 years of dedicated service at the Simbisa Brands bank-rolled side.

Under the tutelage of Goddard, Gamecocks Division Two side finished the 2023 season as first runners up to Sizinda-based Zebra Revolution.

Zebra Revolution is owned by former Highlanders, FC Platinum and Bulawayo City striker Mkhokheli Dube.

“I’m very happy with what the club has managed to achieve under my guidance in my first season as a coach. It was all through hard work from the boys.

“I had only told myself that I have ventured into coaching and the idea was to learn more about the game. It’s a great start for me in my coaching career. I’m very grateful for the opportunity I was granted by Chicken Inn and our sponsors. I’m also grateful to other members of the technical team I have been working with,” said an overjoyed Goddard.

He was with former AmaZulu gritty midfielder Nkosana “Sancho” Gumbo, with Charles Dhliwayo as team manager.

In Bulawayo, Chicken Inn has become the second club to have two teams that will compete in both the country’s elite league — the Premier Soccer League (PSL)  and the second-tier division, the Zifa Southern Region Division One.

Highlanders Football Club are the other team.

Highlanders use their development side, Bosso 90, as a feeder team to the senior side — a spring board for players to graduate from the junior structures to the first team knowing a bit of the club culture.—@FungaiMuderere
