WEDNESDAY, 22 December 2021 will forever ring a bell in the mind of Lupane-bred poet Jonathan Moyo who was the last poet to perform for the late legendary football administrator Ndumiso Gumede.

Gumede died at the age of 76 at Mpilo Hospital on Wednesday afternoon.

His death happened exactly a week after the larger-than-life character was celebrated at the Highlanders Club House for being with the club for 48 years at an event that was attended by the who-is-who in the football fraternity and the creative sector.

Being merry was the order of the day with Gumede being his jovial self. The performance from Moyo where he praised Gumede with his totems was one that many liked and for the artiste, it was a memorable day to rub shoulders with Gumede.

Following the death of Gumede, Moyo who is affectionately known as Mntakagogo yesterday mourned the death of the legendary sports personality who started off as a referee before landing various top posts in the country’s football administration.

“I’m saddened by the passing of our father Gumede. I’ll forever cherish all his successes and the last moments we shared. I consider myself a very lucky artiste as I was one of the very last acts who managed to perform in front of Gumede and be able to see him appreciate my talent as he smiled and nodded throughout my performance,” said Mntakagogo.

Mntakagogo who is also a Highlanders die-hard fan said the poem he showcased was literally his way of paying homage to Gumede.

“During the 48th anniversary last week, various people pledged so many things just to make his day a success. I pledged with a poem thanking him for his contribution to the club and nation at large.

“When I was on stage, I could see that the old man was enjoying as he kept on clapping his hands and nodding his head,” he said.

The greatest moment for Mntakagogo was when he danced alongside Gumede to the tune of yesteryear great Lovemore Majaivana (Inyoni Bani Engelamathambo), a song that was a national anthem at many shebeens, nightclubs and bars whenever Bosso won.

“After my performance, the MC, Mr Morden Ngwenya asked to take a picture with ubaba uGumz and we ended up dancing to Lovemore Majaivana’s song, Inyoni bani engelamathambo. Indeed, it was nice rubbing shoulders with the great man,” said Mntakagogo. – @mthabisi_mthire.
