SOBUKHAZI High School pupils were treated to free drama on Tuesday afternoon after two of their teachers exchanged blows outside the school gate over a $50 debt. Teachers at the school, who requested anonymity for professional reasons, told Chronicle yesterday that woodwork teacher Lucky Nkomo slapped Sikhathazile Muzhamba, a History teacher, who retaliated after she confronted him about the $50 he had borrowed two months ago.

Nkomo is said to have insulted Muzhamba after she asked for her money back and their exchanges degenerated into a fist fight.

“It was around 12PM and Form 1 and 2 pupils had just knocked off from their morning lessons. Muzhamba confronted Nkomo outside the school gate and demanded her $50.

“He told her not to ask for money from him as if he was her boyfriend before slapping her several times,” said a teacher.

Another teacher said Muzhamba started poking Nkomo on the forehand after he insulted her but he tripped her. She slapped him in retaliation and he continued assaulting her.

Witnesses said the school’s security guard had to restrain Nkomo.

A vendor at the school said Nkomo had a history of assaulting teachers as he beat up a male teacher at the school last term. “I was selling my wares near the school and I was surprised when Nkomo started assaulting her. He is a known abuser of cannabis and he also assaulted another teacher last term,” she said.

Another vendor gave a conflicting account saying it was only Nkomo who had assaulted Muzhamba.

School officials reported Nkomo to the police on the same day and he is expected to appear in court today facing assault charges.

Bulawayo Province police spokesperson, Inspector Mandlenkosi could not immediately comment on the incident.

Sobukhazi High School has been making headlines for the wrong reasons in recent weeks.

Recently, a Form Three pupil gave birth to a baby boy in a school toilet before trying to hide it behind the same toilet.

In another headline-making incident later, two Form Four pupils were caught having sex in a classroom at lunchtime.
